Brown Shipley, a Quintet Private Bank, today announces the appointment of Michael Cole-Fontayn as Chair of the Board of Directors (subject to regulatory approval). Rory Tapner, current Brown Shipley Chair, is appointed as Chair of Quintet Private Bank, Brown Shipley’s parent. Tapner replaces Jan Maarten de Jong, who served as a member of the Quintet Board of Directors for three decades, including as Chair since 2015, and is retiring after a long and highly distinguished career.
Cole-Fontayn spent more than 35 years at BNY Mellon in a number of senior leadership roles focused on building the brand, strategy and governance and strengthening relationships with clients, regulators and policymakers. In his position as Chair and CEO of BNY Mellon EMEA, Michael was a member of the Group’s Corporate Executive and Operating Committees.
He currently also serves on Banking and Financial Services industry Boards, including as Chair of the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME), Chair of Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI), as a member of TheCityUK Advisory Board, and, as a member of the Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities Markets Standards Board (FMSB). He played an important role in the Fair and Effective Markets Review, improving culture, conduct and governance within financial services firms in the wholesale markets. In January, Cole-Fontayn was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Cass Business School.
At Brown Shipley, he will work alongside the executive directors to shape the strategic growth of the business and its alignment with the overall group.
Alan Mathewson, Chief Executive Officer at Brown Shipley, comments: “Michael is an influential and well respected leader in financial services, and I’m delighted to welcome him to Brown Shipley. The breadth of his executive and Board experience will be invaluable as we continue to develop our business and strategic growth plans at this very important time for the business. He is also dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion, in particular supporting mental health and wellbeing in financial services, and he will play a part in helping to further shape our D&I agenda.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Rory for his strategic counsel over the past year. We’ve had a number of significant developments over this period, including the acquisition of NW Brown, our adoption of a new investment platform and our group rebrand to Quintet. We look forward to continuing to benefit from his expertise in his new role at Quintet.”
Cole-Fontayn adds: “I look forward to working with Alan and the executive team at an exciting time for Brown Shipley and the wider Quintet group, as Brown Shipley continues to develop ambitious plans for strategic growth and enhancing client propositions.”
Tapner says: “Given my very positive experience at Brown Shipley and my admiration for Quintet, I’m delighted to assume this new role, working with my fellow Board members and Quintet’s Group Executive Committee. I look forward to working with Michael in his role as Chair of Brown Shipley.”
Over the course of his career, Tapner has held roles such as Global Head of Equity Capital Markets and Investment Banking at UBS, and Chair and Chief Executive of UBS Group’s Asia Pacific businesses. Following more than a quarter-century of service at that bank, he was appointed Chief Executive of Coutts in 2010.
