Case study: Investment Management for the long term

Helping our clients see the bigger picture for their wealth and make informed decisions for their family’s future.
Retirement planning and
investment structuring
With retirement on the horizon, a married couple approached us to review the overall structure of their wealth. With pensions, savings and a property sale to consider, they wanted reassurance that they were making the most of their assets as they transitioned from employment to retirement. This case study explains the approach we took.
Background

Married couple, in their fifties, with two adult children and a family home in the UK.

Pensions

£2.5 million across five different pension pots.

Savings

£1 million spread across three different old arrangements.

Additional Cash for Investment

£1.5 million expected from a property sale.

Considerations and challenges — scattered investments and no insight into overall wealth
The family wanted to make sure that their existing investments and pensions could provide an income to replace their employment income. With more free time together in their retirement, they wanted to be able to continue with their current lifestyle and support their grown-up children.

When they approached us, the couple’s existing investments were spread across many different places, and they were unsure how they were being managed. They wanted a clearer picture of their wealth and to benefit from the advantages of combining their assets under the advice of one trusted partner.

They were expecting additional money from the sale of their London flat, and wanted advice on what to do with this sum and how it could impact their Inheritance Tax position. They were also keen to help their children buy their own first homes and supplement their earned income.
How we helped
Working with the family, our Client Advisor and Wealth Planner were able to review all of their existing arrangements. From this, we put together a tailored plan, providing a simplified way forward, including longer term estate and wealth planning.

Pensions:

Reviewed with a view to consolidating them and improving potential flexible retirement income.

Investments:

Reviewed and realigned to our recommendations and ensured they were well placed to benefit from market changes in the coming years. We also discussed and agreed on opportunities available for the additional £1.5m of cash expected from the property sale.

Long-term planning:

We talked about longer-term family succession planning and Inheritance Tax Planning. Plus, we ensured available investment reliefs on ISAs and personal allowances were being used correctly.

What the family had to say
Thank you to all the team members at Brown Shipley that we’ve met over recent months. You’ve made it so much clearer for us and we now finally understand our investments and are reassured that we can be secure and comfortable for our future.

We already feel happier that we know our children will be well supported too as we really liked your complete family approach to our discussions. We particularly liked the fact that you talked with us in a way that we could all understand, which we found refreshing compared to our historic experiences with other companies. We are delighted to have met you and look forward to a wonderful working partnership with you all.
