Philanthropy

Giving with intention, guided by purpose

For families of significant means, philanthropy is rarely a single act. It is a practice that can shape values across generations, clarify the purpose behind a fortune, and contribute to change that outlasts the individuals who began it. Brown Shipley can support you in giving with intention, not just frequency.

What is philanthropy

Philanthropy is the planned, often strategic, use of private resources that . It includes money, time, expertise and influence directed towards causes and challenges that matter to you. Where charitable giving might respond to an immediate need, philanthropy takes a longer view. It asks not only “how can I help today”, but “what change do I want to see, and how might I build towards it.”

For high-net-worth individuals and families, philanthropy offers a way to express what a family stands for and to pass those convictions across generations.

It can include structured approaches such as private foundations, donor-advised funds and charitable trusts, as well as direct giving, impact investing and hands-on involvement with causes. When approached thoughtfully, it can be considered alongside other elements of a broader wealth strategy.

The three Ts of philanthropy

Every philanthropic effort draws on a combination of three resources. Understanding which you have and which you wish to contribute can help shape a giving strategy that feels personal, authentic and sustainable.

Time

The hours and years a person commits, such as serving on a non-profit board, mentoring, volunteering directly, or staying close to the work a gift supports. Time reflects personal involvement and often deepens the impact of the other two Ts.

Talent

The skills, networks and expertise a family may bring, such as business experience, professional relationships, governance insight or specialised knowledge. These may help organisations or causes operate more effectively.

Treasure

Financial capital, for example cash gifts, property or business interests, directed towards causes. This is often structured through foundations, trusts or donor-advised funds to support long-term impact and tax efficiency.

How philanthropy supports high-net-worth individuals and families

A thoughtfully designed philanthropic strategy does more than direct resources towards good causes. It can become a meaningful way to support the transfer of wealth, values and family cohesion across generations.

I. Tax-efficient wealth structuring

Charitable trusts, private foundations and donor-advised funds may help reduce estate and capital gains tax exposure while directing assets towards causes you care about. This can help integrate giving into your broader wealth plan.

II. A framework for family governance

A shared foundation or giving vehicle gives provides multiple generations a reason to come together, discuss priorities and make decisions collectively. This may help build governance habits that may carry over into the family’s broader financial affairs.

III. Transmission of values across generations

Philanthropy can give children and grandchildren a hands-on way to engage with the family’s wealth and the responsibilities that come with it, often before they inherit it directly.

IV. Purpose, identity and legacy

For many families, charitable work can become part of their identity. It reflects their values and may become one of the most enduring expressions of the wealth they have built.

“Wealth, properly directed, is not only a measure of success, it is an instrument of purpose.”
